2010 NFL Picks - Week 16

Well I'm officially going to finish over .500 for the season. I'm not using it as one of my picks today but I love Chicago against the Jets. It's tough to trust Sanchez of late but it's even harder to trust him trying to play through some torn cartilage in his shoulder.

**Baltimore (-4) at Cleveland**
Cleveland has lost their pluck. They had some nice wins earlier in the year but now they are just a flat football team.

Detroit (+3.5) at Miami
Shaun Hill runs that offense pretty well and Miami can't win at home. I can see Miami pulling this game out but the half point really swayed me on this one.

Tennessee at Kansas City (-4)
Kansas City is still clinging to the AFC West which they need to make the playoffs as the wild card is pretty much out for them. So on top of still playing for something which Tennessee is not, the Chiefs take care of business at home.

Bobs NFL Picks: Week 16

Well, I really crapped the bed last week with an 0-3 showing. Keith and I have both had weeks where we rushed our picks, but none were as dumb as me doing it last week when I had pulled into a virtual tie with him. Now, I'm 2 games back with 2 weeks to go and I need to deliver the goods this week. Some lines look too good to be true, so I hope these are smart picks.

Ravens (-4) @ Browns: This is a tricky bet, but the Ravens could really benefit from a win today and the Browns have nothing left to play for.

Jets (+2.5) @ Chicago: I haven't believed in the Bears at any point this season, so why start now?

Patriots (-9) @ Buffalo: This was a last minute switch (I was toying b/t Miami or Oakland instead) but the fact is, the Pats wants to wrap up their regular season today and I expect them to do so. Cold weather and bad conditions have never slowed them down before so I expect today to be no different.

Breaking News - UConn Women Break The Record...8 Months Ago!!!

They use two different size balls, balls that differ in weight, balls that have different inflating pressure, the 3 point lines are different and the shot clocks are different. With all these differences, why is the UConn's womens team's current winning streak being compared with the UCLA mens team? They are two different games. I'm not saying it's not impressive what they are doing but it shouldn't be compared to the men's record just because both sports are basketball. If the men's record were the all time record for NCAA sports it would be a different but it's not. The University of Miami's men's tennis team won 137 straight matches once. I know it's not the same for everyone but for me, you might as well be comparing women's basketball and men's tennis. They are both played on a court with a round ball. That's almost as many similarities as men's and women's college basketball have. Talk to me when they break that record and stop wasting SportsCenter time on the record UConn is just extending a record they broke in March...the WOMEN'S BASKETBALL record.

Bob's Week 15 picks

Bob asked me to get his picks in since he's not around a computer.

Chicago @ Minnesota (+8)

Jets @ Pittsburgh (-4)

Houston (+1) @ Tennessee

2010 NFL Picks - Week 15

I don't think I'm making these picks with a clear head. One of my picks today are wishful thinking because I'm really relying on them for fantasy playoff purposes.

Detroit at Tampa Bay (-4.5)
So I'm starting Josh Freeman, Mike Williams and LaGarrett Blount in my fantasy playoffs this week so I'm just doing my part with the power of positive thinking.

Philadelphia (+3) at New York Giants
Eli Manning has regressed to an extremely mediocre QB. He's Jay Cutler 2009. If Asante Samuels plays than this is my pick of the week. But since won't know that for sure, this one is...

**Jacksonville (+4.5) at Indianapolis**
I'm over the thinking that Indianapolis is without a doubt going to end up making the playoffs. Jacksonville will keep this one close.

Why's Everyone Trippin'? Reaction to Sal Alosi

Sorry. That's an awful title. In reaction to the latest story on Sal Alosi:

http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5922926

At this point I think this story is getting way out of hand. First of all, Sal Alosi should have been fired immediately. People get in trouble for "what could have happened" all the time and Sal Alosi could have ended Nolan Carroll's career. You never know. But where this story is picking up unnecessary steam is about the wall that the undressed Jets players made. Initially the popular belief was that they didn't fire him because because he would probably start throwing other Jets coaches under the bus and now instead of suspending Alosi for the remainder of the season to suspending him indefinitely for ordering the players to make the wall.

I don't see what the big deal is about the wall. If a gunner has a harder time getting back in the field of play therefore taking him out of the play I think it's a good move and I'm sure the Jets aren't the only team to do something like that. If it's against the rules then the refs should have flagged them for it. I'm sure they were just told to stand there and not do anything. Just make the guy have to run around some obstacles if he went out of bounds that far.

What's going to end up happening is that more is going to come out of this because I think there is a 0% chance that Alosi came up with the wall on his own. He's only a strength and conditioning coach. That means he was tasked with getting those guys lined up by a higher up coach. To me it doesn't matter if it was Mike Westhoff or Rex Ryan. There is no reason to cover anything up. If there is something wrong with the player wall, the refs should be calling it. Apparently they've been doing it all year. If Carroll happened to go further out of bounds and ran in to Alosi just standing where he was, this all would be a non issue. He wouldn't have been flagged. There is not a doubt in my mind they were coached to stand where they were. Where the media and non-Jets fans seem to be getting hung up is that Sal Alosi was not coached to stick out his knee and take a player out. He did that on his own. That's why he should have been fired and the book should be closed on this already.

Bobs NFL Picks: Week 14

Well, it took 13 weeks but I have almost completely caught up to Keith after his blazing start. That makes this week uber important, and unfortunately, I just don't see a ton of lines that I love.

Oakland (+4) @ Jacksonville: I don't really buy into either of these teams, but I definitely think that the Raiders will keep the game around a FG.

Packers (-7) @ Detroit: Its crazy to me that the Pack are still playing for a playoff spot, and when they need to win, they usually win big.

Seattle (+5) @ San Fran: Originally, I picked San Fran minus the points but it just didn't seem like a good choice. At 6-6, Seattle needs to win games like this to lock up the division.

Last Week: 3-0
Season: 21-15-3

2010 NFL Picks - Week 14

I'm limping towards the finish. Still 7 games over .500.

Oakland @ Jacksonville (-4)
I immediately regret this decision. I believe Indianapolis is going to come back and win the AFC South. Part of that equation is Jacksonville needing to lose. That being said, cross country trip for a West Coast team playing a 1pm game is not a recipe for success.

Denver (-4) @ Arizona
A couple of things at play for me here. The Jason Garrett/Leslie Frazier Effect, Knowshown Moreno hasn't had a game averaging less than 4.5 yards a carry in 4 weeks and Arizona is 29th in the league against the run and John Skelton is starting in Arizona.

**Kansas City @ San Diego (-10)**
I don't want to minimize this game down to one thing but.....BRODIE CROYLE!!! 0-9 as a starter. Couple that with San Diego being in desperation mode and I can't see this being close.

The Ultimate Fighter Season Recap

This, the twelfth , season of The Ultimate Fighter finished with a bang this past weekend at The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas. It was a great season, that was capped off with a finale that pitted arguably the 2 best fighters of the season against each other.

To get there, Jonathan Brookins had to defeat the seasoned Kyle Watson in a 3 round fight that was predominantly controlled by Brookins. On the other hand, Michael Johnson fought Nam Phan in an all out brawl that could have gone either way. Coach Josh Koscheck had pinned his hopes on his last remaining fighter, Phan, and was presumably very frustrated to see him lose a split decision (one that I had going in Nam's favor). Now the only thing that can redeem Josh Koscheck and his lackluster coaching performance is to defeat GSP in this weekends UFC124.

The Ultimate Fighter finale started with an interesting fight featuring Nam Phan against UFC talent, Leonard Garcia. One may have thought that Garcia would cake walk through Nam, but not me. Although Nam doesn't have KO power or any particularly unbelievable skill set, he was one of the most complete fighters on the show with incredible endurance. Garcia, whose style tends to be a bit wild, was a good match for Nam. The fight started out relatively evenly, although Id score the first round for Nam because his body work did the most damage. The 2nd and 3rd rounds were as clear as day to me. With the exception of 2 meaningless takedowns, Nam destroyed Garcia. He outclassed him standing up, he showed unbelievable poise, and his stamina remained intact throughout. Yet, as we have seen so many times this year, the judges got it wrong and scored Garcia the victor by split decision.

In another televised fight, Cody Mackenzie fought Aaron Wilkinson in an interesting matchup of styles. As usual, Mackenzie came out extremely aggressive and almost had Wilkinson in a guillotine choke 30 seconds into the fight. They eventually get to the mat where Mackenzie works some ground and pound and controls the fight from top position. At the 3:00 mark, he flips Wilkinson and gets him to tap by guillotining his jaw. Another great display of Mackenzies power when he has his opponent in his choke hold.

In other fights, Demian Maia out performed TUF alum Kendall Grove 29-28 in a unanimous decision and Stephan Bonnar manhandled Igor Pokrajac in a unanimous 29-26 decision.

Onto the finale to determine this seasons winner. Although Michael Johnson was Team GSP's top pick, it was clear that Brookins was the favorite as he mowed through competition all season with his constantly improving jiu-jitsu and overall MMA know-how. This fight starts out in typical fashion for Johnson, with him in total control landing vicious shots on a poorly defending Brookins. On several occasions, it looked like MJ might be able to finish the fight but he was unable to land that one decisive punch. And I thought once it went to round 2, he would be in trouble.

As with previous fights, the first round would prove to be Johnsons best and he was a much less complete fighter in rounds 2 and 3. His timing wasn't the same, his stamina wasn't the same, and more importantly his takedown defense wasn't the same. Brookins controlled the final 2 rounds of the fight to eventually win a unanimous 29-28 decision. Its hard watching someone dominate a round like Johnson only to see him lose the next 2 in frustrating fashion, but thats what makes Brookins so good. He has a great chin and if you give him enough time, he will wear you down on the mat.

It was a great finish to this season of the Ultimate Fighter, but the real conclusion will be this Saturday when coaches Koscheck and GSP collide in UFC 124. Although the trash talk wasnt reciprocal, it is obvious that the disdain is. And the last person I would want to fight with bottled up anger is GSP. So he is my pick to not only win, but to destroy on December 11th.

2-1 isn't going to cut it anymore if Keith keeps doing the same thing, so this week I'm picking 3 winners.

Cleveland (+6) @ Miami: This should be a close game and 2 fg's is enough for me to go with Cleveland.

Carolina @ Seattle (-4.5): Seems too easy.

Raiders (+13) @ San Diego: San Diego is super hot right now, but 13 is an enormous spread.

Last Week: 2-1
Season: 18-15-3

2010 NFL Picks - Week 13

Despite being so wrong about Seattle last week I'm going to go back to them this week.

Chicago (-5.5) @ Detroit
I hate betting against home dogs (especially in division games) but Drew Stanton is starting today. I've been down on Chicago all year and now they're 8-3. I'm going to start taking them more seriously starting right.....now.

New Orleans (-7) @ Cincinnati
Cincinnati is a mess and New Orleans seems to be turning it on. Again, I hate taking road favorites but I see this as a route.

**Carolina @ Seattle (-4.5)**
Back to Seattle at home. They burned me last week but this week they are playing the worst team in football

2010 NFL Picks - Week 12

I put myself behind the 8 ball this week by not taking any Thanksgiving games considering there were two of them I liked.

Minnesota (-1.5) at Washington
Taking home dogs usually goes against everything I believe in but Minnesota is a talented team despite their record and I think without Brad Childress there I think the players will be motivated to play.

**Kansas City at Seattle (+2)**
Minus the game against the Giants, Seattle has been good at home. The Chiefs are coming back down to earth in the last couple of weeks.

Tennessee at Houston (-5)
For lack of a better game...Houston is bad at stopping the pass but I still don't see Rusty Smith being able to pass all over anyone. Besides, the Texans are due for a win.

Bobs NFL Picks: Week 12

Happy Thanksgiving! Below are my picks for the week, including one game today to make things a bit more interesting when I'm sitting in front of the TV later on.

Pittsburgh (-6.5) @ Buffalo:

2010 NFL Picks - Week 11

**Oakland @ Pittsburgh (-7)**
Oakland has been feisty but going on the road against the best team in the AFC is tough

Seattle @ New Orleans (-11.5)
Seattle on the road....Seattle on the road

Indianapolis @ New England (-4)
I just don't see how the Colts can keep keeping it close with all their injuries

Last Week: 2-1
Overall: 17-11-2
Pick of the Week:7-2-1

Bobs NFL Picks: Week 11

Not a fan of the lines this week and didn't really spend too much time looking at them, so no guarantees.

Detroit @ Dallas (-6.5): I got killed by Dallas all season, but I honestly believe that the new coach is going to turn their season around. In Dallas, less than a TD....sounds good to me.

Indy (+4) @ New England: The Colts have been miserable ATS this year, and New England has had some great wins (with the exception of that Cleveland loss) but I expect manning to keep it close enough to cover or win.

Cleveland (+2.5) @ Jacksonville: Coming off games against Pitt, New Orleans, New England and the Jets, the Browns realize they need to capitalize on the easier part of their schedule which starts today.

Bobs NFL Picks: Week 10

I rushed through my picks last week and I paid the price, so this week I'm getting them up early. Although I went 1-2, I'm at .500 for the year and in serious striking distance of Keith. Good lines this week make it tough to narrow down to 3, but I think Ive got the ones I want.

Jets (-3) @ Cleveland: I knew once I picked New England last week that it was a total trap. The same can be said for this week, but I doubt it. The Jets are significantly better than NE defensively and Cleveland is coming off 2 great wins, this is their let down week.

St. Louis (+6) @ San Francisco: Ive loved St Louis all year and i especially love this line. San Fran may be better than the 2-6 record, but I don't see them winning this convincingly, if at all.

Detroit @ Buffalo (-3): This is it. This is finally the week Buffalo gets a win after several brutal losses in a row. I actually like a few lines better than this one, but I want to be on board when they get their first win.

Last Week: 1-2
Season: 12-12-3

Bobs NFL Picks: Week 9

I am putting these picks up late, but they were made on time. Not like it helped that much this week. But I have climbed back to .500, which is impressive considering my dismal start. Its only a matter of time before I catch Keith. He can hear the footsteps.

*Win* Kansas City @ Oakland (+1): My favorite bet of the week almost didn't cover. But it did.

*Loss* New England (-4.5) @ Cleveland: Stupid, stupid pick. This was the easiest trap line to read of all time and I still bought into it. Stupid stupid.

*Loss* San Diego @ Houston (-3): I don't regret this bet. The Chargers were without 50% of their starting offense and have been dismal all year on the road and in general. I believe in the Texans. Well, believed.

2010 NFL Picks - Week 9

Tampa (+9) @ Atlanta
Even though we all know Tampa isn't as good as their record, they believe they are as good as their record and that's all it takes sometimes. Atlanta will win but not by more than 9.

**Chicago vs. Buffalo (+3)**
Buffalo gets their first win of the year today in Toronto

Giants @ Seattle (+7.5)
I'm trying something out with this one. Everyone in the world seems to think the Giants are going to roll. Lines makers don't make it this easy. Seattle is the best home field advantage and Whitehurst might have been the better option over Hassleback anyway this week because he is more capable of buying more time with his legs.

Brett Favre - The Biggest Warrior in the History of Warriors

Look at that picture. Brett Favre's career might be over. Two guys are helping him and one guy might actually be holding his jaw in place. What a warrior. It's a shame he has to go out that way.

Oh wait a minute...it was only eight stitches. I once cut my finger open and didn't tell anyone, wrapped it in paper towel and drove myself to the Urgent Care clinic for 5 stitches. But based on Brett Favre's math, I should have had 1.25 people helping me and maybe even holding my finger for me while getting a lot of sympathy from my co-workers.

F' him. I'm over his whole retire/unretire thing. It's annoying but if the guy wants to play, who am I to begrudge him that. What's getting under my skin now is how after every hit or every bad throw he has to limp or hold his arm like what he did was the most painful thing he's ever done in his life. But then the next possession he'll throw a bullet 60 yards in the air and run down the field and jump in to his receiver's arms.

Thank god for the Jenn Sterger thing. That'll probably be the thing that prevents him from coming back next year. F' Him

2010 NFL Picks - Week 8

Everytime I look at my record for the season that 0-3 week haunts me. If it wasn't for that I'd probably have my own 1-900 number by now.

Denver (+2.5) vs San Francisco (in London)
Too bad for London that they have to get this game. Two teams with a combined record of 3-11 is probably not the showcase the NFL wanted to put on. I think Denver being a dog is in reaction to last week's embarrassment against Oakland. Those things happen. Their previous 2 losses before that were against the Jets and Baltimore which is nothing to sneeze at. San Francisco is starting Troy Smith this week and I just don't see them winning this game

**Carolina at St. Louis (-2.5)**
I would have taken St. Louis favored by a touchdown today. I still think Carolina is the worst team in the NFL. DeAngelo Williams isn't starting today which normally isn't a big deal because Jonathan Stewart plays well everytime he has to step in but he's been largely ineffective this year.

Buffalo at Kansas City (-7)
Kansas City is back to being a tough place to play. Buffalo has been playing better but Kansas City is going to go to 4-0 at home this week in convincing fashion.

Last Week: 2-1
Overall: 13-7
Pick of the Week: 5-2

Bobs NFL Picks: Week 8

I'm slowly climbing towards .500. Maybe it'll happen this week, because I love many a line today.

Carolina @ St. Louis (-2.5): I'm sticking with my team of the season again this week even though I'm a little bit worried that Stewart will have the first Carolina breakout running game this year.

Packers (+6) @ Jets: Seems too easy.

Seahawks @ Raiders (-2.5): Could be a let down game for Oakland but I don't buy into Seattle regardless.

2010 NFL Picks - Week 7

No College Football picks this week. I went to 5 concerts this week and just didn't have the time. As for the NFL, I only looked at the lines for the first time this morning:

Cincinnati @ Atlanta (-3.5)

**Jacksonville @ Kansas City (-9)**

San Francisco (-3) @ Carolina

Last Week: 2-1
Overall: 11-6-1
Pick of the Week: 4-2
I should have gained ground on Keith last week, but New England coming back to win really killed me. Maybe this is the week where I get last years moxy back.

Eagles (+3) @ Tennessee: This is a tough game because both teams are a solid 4-2 and it could go either way. But both of Tennessee's losses have come at home which nullifies the home field advantage for me. I know Philly is banged up, but who isn't?

Buffalo (+14) @ Baltimore: Baltimore is a leaps and bounds better football team than Buffalo, but I just dont think they score enough points to open this up more than 2 TD's.

Rams (+3) @ Tampa Bay: If Oakland is Keiths team to bet on this year, than the Rams are mine. I think Tampa is a lot worse than their 3-2 record and I think the Rams are as good as their 3-3 record.

UFC 121: Preview & Picks

In just a few minutes, Brock Lesnar will return to the octagon along with several other fighters to compete in UFC 121. This is an interesting card, with some interesting implications for the possible winners. Will this be the end for Tito Ortiz? Has Lesnar finally met his match? Is Jake Shields the real deal? Is Diego Sanchez still a contender? All questions that will be answered soon.

Here are my selections for most of the fights tonight.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Brendan Schaub: Although I am unimpressed by Schaubs fight resume so far, its interesting to note that Gonzagas most recent wins are against similar caliber opponents. That being said, Gonzaga wants to get back in the mix for a title shot, and this is his first step. I like Gonzaga.

Tito ortiz vs. Matt Hamill: I will never buy into either of these fighters as super talents, but I especially dont buy into Hamill. A loss for Tito here would (should) spell the end for him and I dont expect him to fall that easily. I like Tito.

Diego Sanchez vs. Paulo Thiago: This is a very interesting fight. After once being mentioned as the biggest contender for the lightweight title, two consecutive losses have knocked Diego Sanchez back down a few pegs. This is no easy fight for him to start his ascension back into the welterweight division, but I expect Sanchez to prevail.

Jake Shields vs. Martin Kampman: This is my favorite pick of the night. An unproven Shields has to come into the octagon with a tremendous amount of pressure and take on a tough Kampman. No easy task, and I expect no easy victory. I like Kampman.

Cain Velasquez vs. Brock Lesnar: Very interesting fight. Velasquez is awesome, thats obvious. But what is also obvious is that he is not nearly the right size to take down Goliath in this matchup. If he wants to win, he'll have to do it standing up and I think that will be too tough. Unfortunately, I like Lesnar....argh.

The Ultimate Fighter: Episode 6 Recap

After taking a week off, I'm back to recap tonight's episode of what is shaping up to be one of my favorite seasons of TUF to date.

Last week, Team Koscheck won their first fight when Nam Phan defeated Spencer Paige in a decent fight, although most likely a unanimous victory. Koscheck celebrated by pounding on the walls and gloating, which continued right into this weeks episode. First he starts in with Michael Johnson, calling him fat and out of shape and then he visits the house where he encourages his team to basically act like assholes. As we've seen before, teams usually take on their personality of their coaches, and this year proves that true again.

With Team Koscheck in control, they choose to pit their number one pick Marc Stevens against GSP's 6th pick, Cody Mackenzie. Mackenzie, who has enjoyed going back and forth with Kosch all season, flicks Josh's chin as he walks away from the weigh in. That as you imagine, gets under his skin and puts an even bigger bullseye on Mackenzie's Alaskan back.

Now, this looks like the most lopsided matchup of the season save one important detail. Mackenzie has won all 11 of his fights by guillotine, and Stevens is a wrestler. And although Stevens is clearly the better fighter, his biggest asset is neutralized because he wont want to go to the ground and risk being choked out.

Round 1: As expected, Cody comes out swinging wildly and throws Stevens off his game. Stevens instinctively shoots, and what do you know, ends up in Cody's guillotine. And just like that, he is asleep and less than a minute in, Koscheck is speechless.

For the next fight, GSP picks Jonathan Brookins to fight Sevak Magakian. St Pierre says that Brookins is his secret weapon and we'll have to take his word for it, because we haven't heard or seen much from him all season. Sevak on the other hand, appears to be your run of the mill angry Armenian who would scare the daylights out of me.

Round 1: After a brief getting to know you period, Brookins judo tosses Sevak onto his back where he tries to lock in an arm bar. When that doesn't work, he allows Sevak to get on his feet where he takes his back, lands a few shots, sinks in a standing rear naked choke, and then flattens him out on the mat where he finishes him.

Wow. Two very quick victories for Team GSP in fights where they were absolutely not favored heavily if at all. And just like that, the cocky jock is down 5 fights to 1.

Rushing through my picks this week. Here is what I got.

Baltimore (+2.5) @ New England: I think that Randy Moss leaving is actually going to hurt this team more than they realize. Against a tough defense like Baltimore, I expect NE to struggle this week.

Saints (-4.5) @ Tampa Bay: The Saints have been a far cry from the team that won the Superbowl, and they know that. They still don't have Thomas, but I expect this to be a statement game for them.

Indianapolis (-3) @ Washington: The Redskins have impressed the hell out of me, but the Colts haven't head a healthy team all year. They may not this Sunday either, but they should have enough to win by a touch.

2010 NFL Picks - Week 5

Putting them in earlier than the past 2 weeks. Gave them more thought. Time to open this up on Bob

Kansas City (+4.5) @ Houston
I by no means think the Chiefs are going to keep up their 3-1 pace towards a 12 win season but I am coming around on them as a potential winner of the AFC West. I am becoming a believer in their defense. They are allowing yards but they are not allowing points. And with Houston's receivers banged up I think Kansas City can get the quality road win that will have people start taking them seriously

**Baltimore @ New England (-2.5)**
Does anyone else doubt that New England's offense is going to make a statement this week and put up at least 30 against the #1 defense in the NFL? After all this talk about how effective New England's offense will be without Randy Moss, I don't see Bill Belichick looking wrong in this one. And even though the Pats have lost a little luster over the last year or so, Belichick is still the best and he had two weeks to prepare for Baltimore and New England hasn't lost a game after a bye since 2002. Granted, they played Buffalo four of those times but still...it helps my point.

Oakland (+6.5) @ San Francisco
It's funny. I'm going with Oakland for my 3rd week in a row. The last few times it was because I thought Bruce Gradkowski made them a friskier team. Now Jason Campbell is back to starting and I'm still taking them. One rule I use when betting games is if I look at a team getting points and I would not be surprised if they win the game, I take the points. And 6.5 is a lot of points.

Last Week: 2-1
Overall: 9-5-1
Pick of the Week: 3-2

2010 NCAA Football Picks - Week 7

Ouch. An 0-3 week.

The theme for this week is going to be "Let Downs"

South Carolina @ Kentucky (+4.5)
I think South Carolina squeaks it out but Kentucky will put a scare in to them. A team like South Carolina, with an up and down quarterback like Stephen Garcia normally doesn't cooperate with what the public perception of them should be after a win like last week. "South Carolina beat Bama last week, they should kill Kentucky." Not seeing it.

Ohio State @ Wisconsin (+4)
This is one of only two games that Ohio State could lose the rest of the way. They've only played one road game this year and Wisconsin is different than Illinois. Madison will be rocking and Ohio State's #1 ranking gets threatened after one week.

Mississippi @ Alabama (+20.5)
I feel bad for Mississippi. Bama would need a miracle to get back in the National title picture but one thing they can do to help their cause is to win by large margins and hope some teams above them lose. I still think Bama is the best team in the country and I will be hitting them up for the rest of the season no matter the spread. They are going to be running it up.

2010 NFL Picks - Week 5

I ruined my picks season last week. I had something special going too. Bummer.

These are going up late and in a rush this week which was also the recipe for last week's 0-3 debacle so be warned.

**Denver @ Baltimore (-7)**
Denver's offense is one dimensional and that one dimension Baltimore is leading the league in stopping. The Ravens D is only allowing 119 yards a game through the air per game. Denver is going to need to run to stay in this game and I don't see that happening.

San Diego @ Oakland (+6.5)
I think this my 3rd week in a row taking Oakland. Without McFadden playing I thought this line would be over a TD even though San Diego is on the road. Since it's not I feel like I'm being tricked. Gradkowski has made the Raiders a frisky team. The big concern here for me is that Phillip Rivers is awesome.

Chicago @ Carolina (-2.5)
Carolina is awful and I might be over analyzing here but I think Steve Smith not playing is going to be a blessing for Jimmy Clausen today. Without having a guy like Smith in the lineup, Clausen won't have to worry about forcing targets at him to keep him happen. Not unlike how Eli Manning seemed able to relax when Jeremy Shockey got injured a few years ago. I think he has his best game so far. Also Jay Cutler not playing helps too so the Bears might rely more on the run and Carolina is allowing only 3.3 yards a carry.

Last Week: 0-3
Overall: 7-4-1
Pick of the Week: 2-2

Bobs NFL Picks: Week 5

Well, I totally blew my opportunity to gain serious ground on Keith last week by churning in another 1-2 performance. That kind of stuff aint gonna get it done, so I hope to reverse the momentum this weekend although the lines are tricky.

Packers (-2.5) @ Washington: The Packers are 3-1, but the last 2 games havent been pretty. With Miami, Minnesota, Jets and Dallas coming up they'd love a win over Washington to get them in a good spot.

Falcons (-3) @ Cleveland: Another road game, but I think there will be a little hangover effect from last weeks Cleveland victory over Cincinatti.

Rams @ Detroit (-3): Detroit has to win sometime this season. They have had a few real brutal losses, and I expect that this week they finally get it done.

The Ultimate Fighter Season 12: Episode 3 & 4 Recap

Sorry for the lag time, but here is the abbreviated episode 3 & 4 recaps for the Ultimate Fighter.

Some of the highlights include Koscheck playing his first prank on GSP by parking cars so close to him that GSP couldn't open his doors. As you'd expect, Georges handles this well by saying that he is used to dealing with people like Koscheck and that he used to get picked on a lot in school. Say what? GSP was picked on? I guarantee he wasn't going by the initials GSP back then, because no one is messing with a dude that is identified by only 3 letters. Anyway, the coaching feud may never get off the ground considering its purely one way.

The second fight is chosen and its an interesting one. Team GSP chose number one pick Michael Johnson to enter the octagon opposite UK product, Aaron Wilkinson. On paper, this looked like a sure win for GSP. MJ looked tough and well rounded while Wilkinson was a bit more of a question mark. But anything can happen and its always risky putting your top guy out there this early.

Mike Tyson joins team GSP right before the fight and that adds extra motivation for MJ. However, it doesn't last long as Wilkinson holds his own in round one. After a hot start by MJ, Wilkinson manages to get him to the ground where he controls the last part of the round with some less than stellar ground and pound. However, he likely wins 10-9. Round 2 is slightly less back and forth. Mj lands some great strikes and eventually takes down Wilkinson twice. They trade to end the round but MJ wins this one and they go to a 3rd round. After some good advice from the corner, MJ comes out shot out of a cannon and immediately connects with a straight jab. This takes Wilkinson to the mat where he eventually gives up his back and gets choked out. Not as impressive as you'd expect MJ to be, but a win none the less. Wilkinson moves to the top of the list for wild card contention.

Episode 4 starts out with the team getting tired of Bruce Lee Roys antics. Although initially, he came off as a colorful harmless character, its now clear that he is the cancer in the house. Sevak takes umbrage with Caceres yelling "F*ck him up" during MJ's fight with Wilkinson, and the 2 exchange heated words until eventually Sevak charges after him. But nothing happens and the tension grows.

The next fight is selected and GSP chooses the oldest guy in the house, Kyle Watson to fight the youngest guy in the house, Andy Main. I immediately started wondering about Watson, who is Matt Hughes Jujitsu coach yet has never made anything of himself as a fighter and clearly suffers from some anxiety with fighting. That being said, Main is young and lacks the overall experience.

The first round starts off with some great striking and Main hopping on Watsons back hoping for a rear naked choke. He cant sink it in, but he lands some shots and looks impressive early. But as we expected, Watson is able to get Main to the ground and work to side control where he finishes the round. Close round, not sure how they score it. The second round starts with Main pushing the pace until Watson eventually gets him to the ground. Main tries some submissions, but eventually ends up on his back and thats a bad place to be against Watson. he sinks in the rear naked choke and Andy Main taps before you can say GSP. And just like that, team Koscheck is down 3-0.

2010 NCAA Football Picks - Week 6

Utah State (+1.5) at Louisiana Tech
This decision is a reaction to Utah State's game against BYU last Friday. I know it's on the road but Louisiana Tech hasn't taken advantage of their home field so far losing their two games there to Navy and Southern Miss. I know Utah State is only 2-3 but Diondre Borel was fun to watch and he has a good handle on the offense.

LSU at Florida (-6.5)
I can't take LSU's quarterbacks seriously. Florida should win this game by at least a TD.

Florida State at Miami FL (-6)
Miami is coming back home after three straight on the road and going 2-1 against some good teams. Florida State is still undefeated but they have played no one. I'm down on Jacory Harris but this is a major step up in competition for Florida State

A Look Back at the MLB Over/Unders

In short, my record was 3-2-1

My full selections from the preseason

-Arizona was terrible
-Lucked out with Boston's injuries
-Could not have been more wrong about the Cubs or the NL Central as a whole
-Colorado screwed me in multiple fronts since they teased me with another playoff push I took them to win the NL West when they got to 2 games out. They choked that away as well as their over.
-I don't care what Minnesota's number in next year. I'm putting a ton on it. Best franchise in baseball
-Pushed Oakland

For the overall look:

-After learning what we learned about how the Pirates officially run their business, how can you ever take Pittsburgh's over ever again. That number is going to be like 55 next year.

-I didn't officially go with them but both New York teams did go under. Both of them in heartbreaking fashion if you bet on them. Especially the Yankees since they kept you hoping til the last day.

-The Yankees are the only team in the playoffs this year that did not go over. It's not that weird since their number was extremely high but still.

Bobs NFL Picks: Week 4

Another rough week down in the books. Time to shake it off and change the momentum. Here are my week 4 picks.

Chicago (+3.5) @ NY Giants: I am very surprised at this line. Although the Giants aren't as bad as they've been playing and the Bears aren't as good as they've been playing, I think giving them more than a field goal is too much.

Cincinnati (-2.5) @ Cleveland: This seems too easy so its probably going to be a loss for me.

Houston (-3.5) @ Oakland: This is a big game in my race to catch Keith. I understand his theories, but I am basing this pick purely on personnel.

Three road teams is never a good strategy.

2010 NFL Picks - Week 4

Garrett Hartley prevented me from keeping my first loss off the board.

Last Week's Picks

Sorry they are going up late this week...

Baltimore @ Pittsburgh (-2.5)
Pittsburgh is beating some decent teams with their backup QBs and although it's only Charlie Batch I think this trend continues. Ray Rice is also banged up which should help because he routinely torches the Steelers

Houston @ Oakland (+3.5)
Jumping on the Oakland train again. Based on the talent differential between these two teams a 3.5 point spread seem to me like they are trying to get people to take Houston.

Washington @ Philadelphia (-5.5)
I know I'm overlooking the big storyline for this game and it wouldn't surprise me if McNabb comes back to Philly and has his revenge but I'm officially on board with Philly and Michael Vick.

2010 NCAA Football Picks - Week 5

My college picks and NFL picks are cancelling each other out. I feel real good about these this week...

Last Week's Picks

Virginia Tech at North Carolina State (+3.5)
I'm not back to trusting Virginia Tech yet. Russell Wilson is the best player on the field in this game it's a no-brainer to me to take NC State in this game getting points.

Florida at Alabama (-8)
When I first saw this game with a spread of more than a TD I immediately thought I would be taking Florida. Something must be warped in my memory because I assumed these teams played always played close games. This will be the 5th time they are playing since 2005 with the score differential in those games being 28,15,9 and 19. Alabama is at home, with the better team and 8 points would be the smallest difference between these two in years. I'm switching.

Texas at Oklahoma (-3)
I'm not going to lie. Me taking Oklahoma is a direct result of Texas losing to UCLA at home last week. I think little of UCLA so losing at home to them makes me think less of Texas. Oklahoma has mostly played close games against lesser opponents but those close games still resulted in wins and I think they are currently in better shape to take this year's Red River Rivalry.

2010 NFL Week 3 Picks

Keep it rolling

Last Week's picks

**Atlanta @ New Orleans (-3)**
To me a 3 point spread means that these teams are viewed as equal but the home team is giving the 3 points. Atlanta is good but they are not quite New Orleans.

Pittsburgh (-3) @ Tampa Bay
I kind of hope I'm wrong on this one because I'm like this Tampa Bay story so far. But this is the first time they are not playing a lousy team. Pittsburgh is proving that they can win without Big Ben and I think they keep proving it today

Oakland (+4.5) @ Arizona
I don't think Jason Campbell is a terrible QB but I think the Polish Cannon is going to give the Raiders a lift this week.

Last Week: 3-0
Overall: 5-0-1
Pick of the Week: 2-0

2010 NCAA Football Picks - Week 4

Ouch. Hung an 0-3 for the week. Not good. So obviously you're going to want to jump all over these:

Last Weeks Picks

Temple @ Penn State (-14)
It opened at 16.5. I'm assuming that bettors are going with recent memories of Penn State not putting up a fight against Alabama and Temple's handling of UConn. But Penn State handles Temple pretty easily historically and I expect the same this week

Stanford (-4.5) @ Notre Dame

The streak of 7 Stanford losses in South Bend comes to an end and I jump aboard the Stanford train. They are putting up tons of offense. Notre Dame has been competitive in both their losses but this could be the best team they've played so far.

Oregon (-11.5) @ Arizona State

Two games from the PAC10 this week. I'm on Oregon now too. I'm not worried about them going on the road having played at Tennessee on the road and hanging 48. This team is going to score and I don't see Arizona State being able to keep up.

Last Week: 0-3
Overall: 3-5-1

Bobs NFL Picks: Week 3

I'm having a rough start to the year, so this is a pivotal week for me to turn things around.
Here's what I have for Sunday.

Packers (-3) @ Chicago: I think this matchup of 2-0 conference rivals looks better on paper than it will play out. I know its a different Bears team under Martz, but I still don't think they will be able to keep up with Green Bay.

Washington @ St. Louis (+3.5): The Rams are 0-2, but have only lost by a combined 6 points in their first 2 games. I expect this game to be close enough that the Rams have a chance to win so I'll gladly take the field goal plus.

Cleveland @ Baltimore (-10.5): Baltimore was on everyone's radar screen before this season, but they are 1-1 and approaching the tough part of their schedule. The Browns have been in every game, but I expect Baltimore to try and open this up early.

The Ultimate Fighter: Season 12 Episode Recap

After a strong first episode, TUF resumed this week with the ever important team selection. Both coaches agreed that Michael Johnson was the strongest fighter of all 14, but GSP was smart enough to trick Koscheck into thinking he would pick his buddy Marc Stevens. Koscheck wins the coin flip and to GSP's delight, he decides to pick first to ensure he gets Stevens. Michael Johnson is grabbed next and Dana White agrees, that GSP played Koscheck perfectly.

The coaches finish selecting their teams, and they are listed below in order of selection.
GSP: Michael Johnson, Johnathen Brookins, Spencer Paige, Alex Caceres (Bruce Lee Roy), Karl Watson, Cody Mackenzie, and Dane Sayers
Koscheck: Marc Stevens, Sevak Magakian, Sako Chivitchian, Andrew Main, Nam Phan, Aaron Wilkinson, Jeff Lentz

Its hard to tell which team had the better draft, but the advantage should probably go to GSP because he picked 2nd and got who they agree is the best fighter. Its clear from the beginning that both coaches have very different coaching styles. GSP views himself as a training parter, while Koscheck seems to operate a little more like a drill seargent. GSP also decides to let one of his fighters, Bruce Lee Roy, select the first fight and he chooses to match up against Jeff Lentz. Both guys are young, but showed promise in their prelims. Lentz, who has been drinking heavily and smoking, seems a bit more one dimensional, but may be the better stand up fighter.

The fight starts off with neither fighter doing much, despite Bruce Lee Roy trying some flashy kicks. Lentz pins him against the cage and they stay clinched for the next 2+ minutes. Caceres attempts a standing guilottine but Lentz eventually gets out of it and gets on top of him. The fight doesnt get exciting until the last 10 seconds of the first round when they trade a few shots and Lentz finishes by judo tossing Caceres on his back and most likely wins the round.

The second round starts with Lentz pushing the pace and forcing another clinch against the cage. Lentz sweeps him, and ends up in side control. He drops a few elbows but allows Caceres to initiate a triangle that takes forever to sink in. After Lentz tries to punch his way out of it, he ends up tapping halfway through the 2nd round. Both fighters looked very average, but since its only the first fight, its hard to say how far Caceres can go.

Bobs NFL Picks: Week 2

I don't like the lines at all this week, not that it really matters after last weeks performance. But here are my picks.

**Kansas City (+2.5) @ Cleveland**: I'm sure Kansas City's win last week against the Chargers was at least in part, a fluke, but I'm not convinced that the Chiefs aren't an 8-8 team this year.

Philadelphia (-6.5) @ Detroit: I don't like to make a habit of picking road teams giving up almost a touchdown, but I think Stafford being out is a huge swing in this game. Shaun Hill is terrible and although the Eagles are also without their starting QB, Vick has a lot to prove and I think he will continue his redemption effort this weekend.

Houston @ Washington (+3): Argh, I regret this already. Houston is the better team and 3 points is not a lot, but in Washington I think this has all the makings of a let down game for Houston. Washington should keep it close, and the Houston defense showed that it was very vulnerable last weekend which could put Washington in a position to win late.

Season: 0-2-1
Pick of the week: 0-1

The Ultimate Fighter: Season 12

Season 12 started this past Wednesday night with Josh Koscheck and Georges St. Pierre coaching a group of unproven lightweights. I'll admit, my expectations are not great, nor have they been for the last few seasons, but this first episode didn't disappoint.

To look at the fighters, you wouldn't think that the next BJ Penn or Frankie Edgar is among them, but thats the thing with the UFC, you cannot judge a book by its cover. Many of the most dangerous guys are the ones that look like your next door neighbor and not Kimbo Slice. As has been the case with the last few seasons, the 28 fighters had to fight there way on the show for the 14 spots in the house. Highlights included a 14 second knockout by New York native Marc Stevens, a nice triangle submission by Andy Main, an impressive ground and pound by Jeff Lentz, a brutal beatdown by Michael Johnson and a wicked guillotine choke by Cody McKenzie.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the emergence of Bruce Lee Roy who came out in a banana yellow jumpsuit and a shit eating grin on his face, but ultimately turned in a fine performance and won via choke against Paul Barrow. Lee Roy seems to be the character of this season and also one of Dana White's favorites. Hopefully he's more substance than talk, unlike past characters Jamie Yager and DaMarques Johnson.

This was a good kick start to what looks to be an entertaining season. The previews for the next few episodes include Koscheck going after an enormous black dude on GSP's staff that is twice his size, a guy getting laid out during a fight in the house and the normal tom foolery. Stay tuned.

2010 NFL Week 2 Picks

I'll take an 2-0-1 start

Last Week's Picks

**Seattle @ Denver (-3.5)**
I have to believe that last week's Seattle performance was an anomaly. Let's see how they do on the road.

Arizona @ Atlanta (-6.5)
Another half a point and probably would have stayed away. One week isn't going to scare me off and losing to a Big Ben-less Steelers is a red flag but it was on the road.

Tampa Bay (+3.5) @ Carolina
I might take the Bucs straight up in this game. While I'm not panicking over the Falcons after Week1, I did see enough of Carolina to see that they are going to be lousy.

Last Week 2-0-1
Overall 2-0-1
Pick of the Week 1-0

2010 NCAA Football Picks - Week 3

2-1 last week. I'm happy with the start. Kansas winning outright was nice to see. I like Turner Gill and want to see him succeed.

Last Week's Picks

California (-3) @ Nevada
I'm not overly confident in this game but I'm taking it anyway. Nevada never seems to beat BCS schools. Notre Dame and Missouri last year, Texas Tech and Missouri in 2008, Nebraska and Northwestern in 2007. With only three picks I've been trying to stay away from road teams but even though Nevada might have the best player on the field, I believe Cal has enough to keep the trend going for Nevada.

Louisville @ Oregon State (-20.5)
I do not think much of Louisville this year (which is unfortunate since my Big East College Football Fantasy team is peppered with Cardinals) so that coupled with it being Oregon State's home opener after having a bye last week has me thinking Oregon State will blow the doors off Louisville.

Texas @ Texas Tech (+3)
Texas Tech isn't intimidated by Texas anymore after beating them two years ago and playing them tough in Austin last year. Texas is good but their #6 ranking this year I feel is due to name recognition. This year Taylor Potts is a senior and he's played against Texas before and I think they'll win this game outright at home.

Bobs NFL Picks - Week 1

I finished my NFL picks last season with a record of 30-18-1, including my unpopular pick for the Saints to cover in the Superbowl. But that was just for glory, and this year, their are much higher stakes than glory. Keith and I will be going head to head with our NFL picks this season (3 a week) and the loser will have to suffer the consequences. In addition to an NFL jersey of the winners choice, a compromising photo will be posted to the blog where it shall remain from the close of this NFL season to the start of the 2011 season.

I will also be selecting my bet of the week as indicated by ** before and after the selection. So with a lot to play for, here are my picks.

**Cleveland @ Tampa Bay (-3)**
Although Tampa Bay is not a playoff team, they are not one of the 6 worst teams in football this year where Cleveland still very much is. This game will not be televised in Tampa and I think that will provide some added motivation for the Bucs.

Colts (-1.5) @ Houston
I realize these teams play each other very close, especially early in the season, but I just don't think this is the year that the Texans beat the Colts out of the gate.

Dallas (-3) @ Washington
I don't love this bet, but I think Dallas is one of the best teams in football until they prove otherwise. The Redskins are improved, but McNabb hasn't played all preseason and I think the offense will sputter early causing them to fall behind. They do not have the offense to play catch up with the Cowboys.

2010 NFL Football Week 1 Picks

This season I'm going to keep track of my Bet of the Week. They will be indicated by ** before and after the game.

I took last night's game and pushed so here are my remaining two for the week:

**Cincinnati @ New England (-4.5)**
I just have a bad feeling about Cincinnati this year. With all the preseason talk about the Jets I think the Pats are going to come out and try to prove that they are still the class of the AFC East. Unless Tom Brady gets so shaken from the car accident that he starts a downward spiral of thrill seeking, cocaine and dating porn stars. Sorry. Bad Entourage reference. I can't believe I still watch it either.

Green Bay (-3) @ Philadelphia
I'll jump on board. Green Bay is going to be good this year. That isn't the question for me in this game. It's what kind of team are the Eagles going to be this year. It wouldn't surprise me if they won the division or it wouldn't surprise me if they finished 4th. I hate picking a road team in Week 1 but I think I've been propagandized in to Packers = Awesome.

Season 0-0-1

2010 NCAA Football Pics - Week 2

Pretty standard first week for me. 1-1-1. At least I'm consistent.

Last Weeks Picks

Georgia Tech @ Kansas (+13.5)
That was an embarrassing loss. The popular thought would be that Kansas couldn't beat North Dakota State at home so how are they going to hang with the 15th ranked team in the country. I'm going the other way. Turner Gill is a good coach.

Miami(FL) (+8.5) @ Ohio State
I kind of believe in Miami this year. I think this game is going to stay within a TD either way.

Penn State @ Alabama (-12)
Youngstown State wasn't a good enough test for me to believe Robert Boldin can hang with Alabama. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a 3 or 4 touchdown win for Bama.

Opening Night NFL Pick

I'm going to wait until tomorrow to make my other two picks but I do want one of my 3 picks for the week to be tonight's game. I thought the line would be a little higher which makes this pick a little too easy which does worry me.

Minnesota @ New Orleans (-5)
It just seems too easy. You think Favre is going to be ready because he always is but this time he's coming off surgery and he doesn't have his favorite receivers. Add in that the New Orleans Saints are coming back as conquering heroes and I think this is a 31-21 type game.

Hard Knocks Postmortem

Ideally I would have liked to do a weekly recap of Hard Knocks but there was no guarantee that I would actually get to watch it as appointment television every Wednesday night. But now that's it over I'd like to give a postmortem.

I normally hate stuff like this when it comes to my team. If this was the first season of Hard Knocks I would have been watching looking through the spaces in my fingers as I covered my eyes expecting the worst. But I've watched a few seasons of Hard Knocks and NFL Films does such a good job that I was actually looking forward to Training Camp with the New York Jets.

Although Darelle Revis was the most important story of Jets camp, it was far and away my least favorite story on Hard Knocks. Living in New York, we were inundated with Revis hold out stories. I like Hard Knocks because you gets to see undrafted rookies trying to make the team or two guys fighting over a starting job.

The most jarring thing to see on the show was someone getting cut and it has a lot to do with the way Mike Tannenbaum does it. He greets you went you walk in and matter-of-factly tells you that they are going to let you go essentially as your ass is hitting the chair. Then another couple of sentences about how they appreciate they effort they gave and that's it. Dream crushed. Fascinating television.

I read and heard a lot that Rex Ryan was playing over the top for the cameras. I disagree. There were no HBO cameras around when he was telling everyone the Jets should be the favorites in the AFC Championship game or apologizing that the Jets season was over at 7-7. Like him or hate him, he doesn't have a filter between his brain and his mouth and I believe what you see is what you get.

I'm not above being propagandized by television. Last year I finished last season's Hard Knocks with the Cincinnati Bengals thinking 2009 was going to be Chris Henry's breakout year. I drafted him on my fantasy team and everything and now we all know what happened to him. Here is my list of ways I was propagandized by this season of Hard Knocks:

-LaDanian Tomlinson might not be done yet. He's not going to play at a Hall of Fame caliber level but I think he's going to help more than he's going to hurt.

-If I was rich and had 250 dollars laying around to get a random authentic Jets jersey, John Connor would be in my top 3 choices.

-For a guy that played 8 games and had 2 solo tackles last year I was devastated to learn that Ropati Pitoitua was going to miss the season. That guy looks huge and pretty quick for his 6-8 315 frame. I was actually comfortable with him being part of the defensive line rotation.

-I don't care if he was the 1st round draft pick this year. Admit your mistake and cut Joe McKnight. He never really lived up to the hype of being the best high school football player in the country and he looks light years away from being an NFL player. Chauncey Washington deserved to be on this team.

The Kellen Clemens thing was insane to be in the room for. First you see Kellen Clemens saying that he just wants an opportunity to have a legit shot at a competition for a starting job in the NFL the within the half hour he's faced with a decision to be released or take a pay cut to be 3RD STRING. He takes the pay cut to be the emergency quarterback. That strikes me as a guy that would rather just be employed in the NFL than compete for a job anymore. I used to feel bad for him because he really hasn't had a fair shake. The one year he got to start a few games, it was behind one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. Maybe he was just blindsided by Tannenbaum's honesty and bluntness.

Mike Westhoff was probably the real star of Hard Knocks for me. I always knew he was a respected special teams coach he pulls no punches when talking about players good or bad and I found him to be a pleasure to watch.

I think the Jets will be competitive this year. I think they will have a very similar regular season as last year. The reason I don't think they'll be that much better is because Mark Sanchez still isn't that good yet. You hear people say he's grown enormously as far as being a leader and having it being his huddle. That's great an all but that doesn't really help his decision making once the ball is snapped. Hard Knocks made him a likable guy (which he was already) but it also highlighted his immaturity.

I would have liked to see more of Shonn Greene. I still don't know much about him as a person. I also would have liked to see the whole Tony Richardson being cut for the day situation. I still don't get that. I think the Jets pissed off some veterans by getting rid of Thomas Jones and Alan Faneca and resigning Tony Richardson so quick was less of a roster shuffle they had to do when Revis was signed as it was a backpedal based on the Jets players reaction.

All and all I loved every second of Hard Knocks. I'll watch it again next year but it'll never be the same as having your team as the star.

Bobs Over/Under NFL Picks

I'm just getting around to looking at these lines now, and I really like 10 of them. I'll select my top 6 for the season to stay consistent with Keith & Pete.

Raiders - Under 6.5
I almost want to reload my account just so I can bet on this. I know they are a slightly improved team with a defense that keeps them in games, but its not like the line is at 4.5. For them to go over, they would have to win 7 games which they have not done since 2002. In fact, they haven't won 6 games since 2002. Tis a slam dunk.

49'ers - Under 9
I like the 49'ers this year, I really do. But I think worst case scenario with this bet is a push, because they are not winning 10 games. They play in a cupcake division, but even if they win all of their division games (which they wont), they still could finish at 9-7.

Giants - Over 8.5
I don't necessarily love the Giants this year, but I think the Eagles are down and the Skins haven't improved enough. They may go into their final game with 8 wins and need to beat Washington to get the over, but even then I wouldn't be worried.

Seahawks - Under 7
Im picking my second team to go under in this division and that may prove to be foolish, but the Seahawks have gone from mediocre to just plain bad. They are trotting out one of the worst wide receiver corps and running back duos in football to join their aging quarterback.

Colts - Over 11
They hit the rough part of their schedule in week 10 (New England, San Diego, Dallas) but by that point they may very well be 8-0. They have the schedule and talent to produce another 13 or 14 win season and keep in mind they would have hit this over every year since 2002.

Chargers - Under 10.5
I'm not sure I love this, because their schedule is actually pretty easy but their are just too many question marks with this chargers team. I know everyone loves Ryan Matthews, but how well he will perform at this level? And without Vincent Jackson taking some of the defensive focus, this team may sputter offensively.

2010 NFL Predictions

Because this went so well last year

AFC
East : Patriots
North : Ravens
South : Colts
West : Chargers

Wildcards: Jets, Texans

AFC Champions : Colts

NFC
East : Eagles
North : Vikings
South : Saints
West : 49ers

Wildcards : Giants, Packers

NFC Champions : Packers

Super Bowl Champions : Colts

NFL MVP : Matt Schaub
NFL Defensive Player of the Year : Patrick Willis
Offensive Rookie Of The Year : Mike Williams
Defensive Rookie Of The Year : Daryl Washington
Coach Of The Year : Gary Kubiak

Notes:
-Until someone unseats the Pats (with Tom Brady at QB) I can't pick otherwise.
-Texans or Steelers for the other wildcard was the hardest decision I had.
-I'm leaving the Cowboys out. The home Super Bowl won't be a story by Week 9
-I would have liked to pick CJ Spiller as Offensive Rookie of the Year but they have three above average RBs in Buffalo. It's too much of a carries share for me to go there.
-I know I have the Packers making the Super Bowl but not winning the division. That is on purpose.

Keith's Over/Under Picks Explained

This is by far the hardest year I can remember trying to pick Over/Unders. Usually there is one or two teams that jump off the page at you like Tampa at 6.5 last year.

Chicago Bears - Under 7.5
The Packers and Vikings are finishing 1-2 in the NFC North so that usually puts the 3rd place team at around 8-8. But Cutler is more than capable to lose a game or two on his own and there is something about Detroit that makes me think Chicago might not be guaranteed a sweep against them this year.

Cincinnati Bengals - Under 8.5
Again I'm going with the theory that the 3rd place team in this division will be right around 8-8. Having T.O. and Ochocinco on the same team as well as Cedric Benson has me leaning towards Cincy as a team with more downside than upside. Something's going to happen.

Indianapolis Colts - Over 11
Peyton Manning is always good for a 12-4 ro 13-3 season. Hopefully they have these 11 wins by Week 15

Kansas City Chiefs - Under 6.5
By far my least favorite selection. Other than San Diego, there are wins to be had among K.C., Oakland and Denver within the division. Any combination of those three teams finishing 2-4 in the AFC West wouldn't surprise me but I'm going with K.C. to be the one pulling up the rear.

New Orleans Saints - Over 10.5
I'm going against history here. I know no NFC South team has repeated as division champ but New Orleans is too good. Pending the Madden curse hitting Brees they should get to 12 wins. Plus they get the NFC West this year which I think it a pretty weak division overall.

Washington Redskins - Under 7.5
If I was going to predict the NFC East, I would pick Washington to finish in 4th. I don't think McNabb is THAT huge of an upgrade over Jason Campbell. I know that sounds crazy but if Jason Campbell was so bad, why are all of a sudden ESPN's experts consensus has the Raiders all of a sudden as the 2nd best team in the AFC West? I think McNabb is probably good for maybe one or two more wins than Campbell by actually having had play in some big games but I don't see this team getting back to .500.

2010 NFL Over/Under Game

Still toying with the Over/Under game. This year we are picking using the odds in hopes that it prevents a tie at the end. Each pick is calculated as a 250 dollar bet so whoever has the most money after the season based on our 6 picks each is the winner:

2010 NCAA Football Picks - Week 1

"I don't know if it'll make any change, but I figured it's time for me to start playing ball."

After a three-plus month layoff, I'm going to get this blog up and running again. Having a kid and buying a house really didn't leave a lot of time to blog. But I'm going to get this going with my 1st week college football picks. So if you like going .500 and losing your vig, then follow along with me.

Minnesota (-1.5) @ Middle Tennessee State
This line started at MTSU giving 4 and if Dwight Dasher was playing I probably would have taken them. You can take a Mark Ingram off an Alabama and they can just plug in another guy who was a blue chip recruit but taking the best player off a Sun Belt team is a different story (let alone the best player in the conference). Minnesota is probably the worst team in the Big 10 but taking away someone who accounted for almost 4000 total yards and 36 of his teams 47 TDs makes me wonder where MTSU's offense is going to come from.

Pittsburgh @ Utah (-3)
A lot of people are high on Pitt this year but this screams "trap game." The 15th ranked team in the country getting three points looks like a line that is trying to get the casual bettor to take it. Utah has a completely rebuilt defense but they are always good and should have a good enough offense to keep up with Pitt.

Maryland @ Navy (-6)
This is pretty much a pick that it based on last year for me. I don't think Maryland is any good and I think Navy's triple-option with Ricky Dobbs is a tough assignment for your first game of the year (i.e., Ohio State escaping 31-27 in last year's opener).

Girls Flag Football

I can't say I expected my next blog post to be about girls flag football, but reading about it in the NY Times today made me want to comment. First, I should point out that I don't really have any interest in watching women sports (maybe a passing interest in Women's World Cup soccer) but I am still nevertheless a strong supporter of Title IX. I don't think funding for sports in HS programs and college programs should be overwhelmingly favoring male sports even if they are overwhelmingly more exciting to watch (sorry ladies). The point of sports programs, if we take them at face value at educational institutions (which I do), is to encourage young people to develop some of the skills and character traits we value highly in society - teamwork, camaraderie, ambition, fair play, mutual respect, etc. It is also important that these kids have fun! If the kids aren't having fun, for whatever reason, the point of the sports program is essentially lost. That's why I find almost all of the perspectives concerning female flag football teams in this article to be so misguided. First, I need to admit that I had no idea that high schools had female flag football teams. But I'm glad that they do and, from appearances in this article, so do all of the girls who participate. That's why its infuriating to read about how all of these high-minded flag football advocates and critics alike, have lit upon the position that these teams have no worth or deserve to be eliminated because colleges don't offer scholarships or higher division opportunities for these girls beyond club sports. Excuse my blunt language but that is HOGWASH! Yeah, I said it! HOGWASH! It's disappointing the our society has come to determine an athletic program's worth by its abilities to produce professional athletes but, I repeat, that is NOT the purpose of educational athletics! It's not...I'm sorry. The suggestion that these programs be cut because, as some people advocate because - they don't offer higher ed opportunities; they "steal" athletes from other scholarship sports like swimming and gymnastics; they have not increased the total proportion of female athletes - is insane. In this article we have both well-intentioned and ill-intentioned actors looking to cut the program in the name of the female athletes they supposedly represent. But you know who doesn't actually have a voice in this NY Times article? The female players themselves! Ask them if they want their flag football team cut because they don't offer Division I scholarships. While I haven't conducted an official poll on the question, I'm pretty sure I can guess their response. Additionally, history suggests that, in time, colleges could begin to form Division I-III flag football teams when demand is sufficient to warrant them (as it's done in legions of sports before it). That's why statements like this one, from a supposed advocate for women's sports, are so infuriating:

Ms. Hogshead-Makar, who also serves as the senior director for advocacy at the Women’s Sports Foundation, said girls missed the educational benefits if they did not take a sport seriously.“That’s one of the things that makes sports such an important experience,” she said. “You’re always striving to get to that next rung.”Ms. Hogshead-Makar said flag football’s time should be up.“We’ve had 10 years of girls who have not been given other sports opportunities,” she said. But she said she would be open to changing her stance if she saw commitment by universities or the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

It would be impossible for me to disagree with a statement more completely. If people at the top of sports foundations, both male and female, are actually thinking like this, they need to be summarily dismissed. Given the percentage of athletes that are good enough to make it to the highest rung in a given sport (you know, something like 0.001%), its embarrassing to think that this is the way our leadership really thinks. These people are actively missing the point of athletic competition and shouldn't be in any position to influence policy or speak on its behalf.

The Ultimate Fighter: Episode Recap

It looks like I'm on an every other week schedule with these recaps, my apologies. Last week, Court McGee lost a controversial decision to Nick "The Promise" Ring. That fight was pretty close, but I would have scored it 20-18 as well. McGee scored more punches, but Ring landed a ton of kicks and did enough to eek out each round. That being said, he did not show enough to warrant being the first selection by Tito and was overall less than stellar. We also see that "The Promise" may have a knee injury that was exacerbated in his fight with Court. We'll see how that plays out along with the rash of other injuries this season.
On a side note, I'd like to put this blog on the map by outing Nick Ring. Here is how I know he is gay, not there is anything wrong with that.

1. Gayest. Nickname. Ever. The promise ring? Really? That would be gay if it were someones nickname in a ballet competition.

2. Early in the season he got mad at Jamie Yager for "name calling." Last time I heard that I was on a playground, in 1984.

3. When he was called to fight Court, he stood up, raised his index finger and said "no you didn't." Nuff said.

The fight this week was between last pick Joe Henle and Seth Baczynski, who was brought back after the injury to Chris Camozzi. Everyone seems to agree that Henle is too inexperienced to win a fight with a well rounded fighter like Seth, but he was able to win his prelim by submission, so who knows. Onto the fight. The very very boring fight.

Round one goes back and forth with both fighters scoring takedowns and attempting submissions. Baczynski nearly finishes Henle with a choke, but Henle is able to reverse and nearly sink in a choke of his own. Ultimately, Seth spends more time on top and wins the round.

Round two starts off with them trading a few jabs, which is a welcome change from the first round, but inevitably they end up on the mat again. Joe controls the entire round, and although he attempts a few submissions, he never lands a single strike of consequence. His coaches said he had bad stand up, and this fight was a highlight reel of bad stand up. Despite a late push from Baczynski, Henle wins this round and they go to Sudden Victory.

Round three isn't worth recapping. Henle is completely out of gas and spends the entire round on his back. Not a ton of damage done to him, but it was as one sided as a boring fight could be. Baczynski wins by decision and moves on.

After the fight, Kyacey Uscola and Kris McCray are chosen to fight each other for the wild card selection. Also, filling in for injured Rich Antonito is Court McGee. Which means, essentially everyone gets a second chance this season.

Paul Daley's Release from the UFC

What happened in the aftermath of the Josh Koscheck/Paul Daley fight was extremely uncalled for and classless. Immediately following the cheap shot I said to myself that Paul Daley will obviously be suspended. When his expulsion from the UFC came down, you can't help but wonder if the comments that Dana White made on the brawl after the Strikeforce: Nashville card on CBS a few weeks ago put him in a position where he had to make an example of Paul Daley.

It's tough to say. It seemed harsh at the time but I've seen Million Dollar Baby. I've seen what can happen when someone gets in a shot after a bell.

**I actually tried to find the sucker punch from Million Dollar Baby on YouTube but had to stop after a few minutes because it felt weird.**

NY Mets - What A Difference Two Weeks Makes

Two weeks ago I posted THIS regarding the New York Mets.

While I'm still loosely standing by that post, I'm happy it looks like my baseball season will last at least through May which it didn't look like was going to happen two weeks ago.

Just looking at the 9-1 home stand they just finished, there are of course things that I liked:
-Ike Davis
-3 starters with a sub-1.00 ERA
-The Bullpen
-Jason Bay raising his average .052 points and driving in some runs

But there are also things that worry me:
-Oliver Perez: 5.19 ERA and 2.07 WHIP
-Only Santana and Pelfrey averaged 6 or more innings in their starts during this stretch.
-The Mets still only scored 4.8 runs per game and hit .262 over that stretch. That's still in the middle of the league average and that was during a winning streak.

I hope I'm wrong and the Mets are in it all year but the last 3 years have only allowed me to be cautiously optimistic so far. That's a far cry from 2 weeks ago

The Ultimate Fighter: Episode Recap

Another week layoff (blame New Orleans) but Im back for episode 5 of TUF. The episode starts with some of the fighters discussing who will get the wild card selection of the guys who have lost. It appears that there may be at least 2 losers getting a chance at redemption, because in addition to the wild card, one of last weeks winners Rich Attonito suffered a broken hand and will not be able to fight again.

Tito was relishing his first win (Jamie Yager last week) and selected one of his toughest guys Chris McCray to face unassuming Josh Bryant. Although Team Ortiz seems to already be looking past Bryant, both fighters enter their fight undefeated (9-0 and 10-0 respectively). While training for the fight it appeared that some guys on Team Ortiz question the rigors of their workout regimen. On Team Lidell, we find out that once again, Lidell won't be able to attend the fight so Bryant will be coached by assistant John Hackleman. Im starting to wonder why Lidell was offered the coaching spot this season considering his "other engagements" have gotten in the way of all but 1 fight. What engagements could be more important than coaching the show of the sport that made him famous? Who knows, maybe Entourage came calling again.

Now to the fight....

Round one starts out and both guys trade some solid shots, but overall McCrary pushes the pace and Bryant seems unable to find his rhythm. McCrary takes Bryant down several times and one point I looked to my wife and asked whether or not bryant was even alive. I thought maybe McCrary was tossing around a corpse. Bryant rallies a bit but not enough and McCrary wins the round.

Round two is an entirely different story. McCrary is completely gassed as soon as the bell rings and one wonders if Kyacey was right in his questioning of the arduous training. Bryant lands several great jabs and combos during the round and also scores a couple decisive takedowns. Although he finishes the round on his back, he does damage from that position and thus, he wins this one convincingly and the judges agree. Onto sudden victory.

Sudden victory starts off with Zzzzzzzz's. Both guys are exhausted and neither can mount an effective flurry or takedown during the first 3 1/2 minutes. But when Herb Dean separates them, its all over. Bryant lands 8-10 great shots to McCrarys face and then takes him down where he almost chokes him out, but instead takes the unanimous victory.

Team Lidell 4 - Team Ortiz 1

The Ultimate Fighter: Season 11 Episode Recap

Episode 3 of TUF Middleweights starts with Dana making one of his classic over the top announcements. Unfortunately for Team Ortiz, it wasn't good news. One of their fighters, Chris Camozzi, had a fractured jaw and had to be sent home which opened the door for prelim loser Seth Baczynski to come on as a replacement.
Team Lidell was in control for the 2nd fight selection and they decided to match Brad Tavares against James Hammortree. Thats a rough draw for Tavares, because lets face it, a guy with the last name Hammortree was born to fight. Back at Team Ortiz training session, tensions rose as Nick Ring and Jamie Yager got into it while sparring. Yager, who gets under everyones skin, apparently really ruffled feathers when he called Ring a bitch. Ring hates name calling.

When the fight starts, The 1st round is back and forth with Tavares stuffing an early takedown and attempting a rear naked choke. Hammortree eventually gets in side control, but does very little damage. The rest of the round could go either way, but I score it for Tavares, barely.

The 2nd round starts in a clinch that eventually lands Hammortree on his back. They reverse position and end up battling against the cage. Ortiz then secures himself as the most annoying ringside coach ever by yelling the same thing over and over again, in one case screaming bodylock 8 times in a 5 second time frame. Tavares spends the remainder of the round trying to secure an arm lock. Although thats not a bad tactic, it may have cost Tavares the round as he inflicted very little damage and spent a good portion of the 5 minutes on his back.

The first two rounds are scored a draw, so they battle for sudden victory in the 3rd round. Both fighters are gassed, so I expected a sloppy final 5 minutes. Instead they start by exchanging solid jabs (the best of the fight) for the first minute, and then Tavares is taken down. Hammortee gets in half guard, lands a couple of blows and just when you start thinking the fight could be over, somehow Tavares gets to his feet and controls the next 3 minutes. Although Tavares never secures a submission and Hammortree did more early damage, I score the 3rd round for Tavares because of Octagon Control.

The judges agree with Tavares winning and retaining control for Team Lidell. They go into next week up 2-0 with a chance to really bury Team Ortiz.

Why Do The Mets Hate Me?

The Mets are not a good baseball team. There is no bill of goods that could have been sold to Mets fans that would have made us believe that they had a shot to compete for the playoffs this year. I understand that it's only 8 games in to the season and I really hope I'm eating crow for this in September but I'll bet you I'm not.

They went out and got Jason Bay. That's great. You can always use more offense but going in to the season, the Mets had one pitcher (Johan Santana) that will probably finish over .500. You can make a case for Pelfrey to finish (at most) at .500 or a game over but that's not impressive if you consider he is probably their "number 2" starter. Going in to the season anyone with any common sense knew that nothing good could possibly come out of having John Maine and Oliver Perez make up 40% of your rotation. Omar Minaya says that after weighing what was out there against what we know Maine and Perez can do based on them each winning 15 games a few years ago it was worth the risk. It blows my mind to think that me and the Mets front office are watching the same players.

Even with them keeping Maine and Perez to start the season, there are a two things the Mets could have (or still can) do to make me happy that doesn't involve any trades or free agent signings. I'll speak for the whole Mets fan base with these:

1. They should have kept Nelson Figueroa and sent Jenrry Mejia down to AAA as a starting pitcher to start the year. Someone with any Common Sense Index had to know the Mets were going to have starting rotation problems. Figueroa could have stepped in as a spot starter or came in and gave 3 or 4 inning out of the bullpen after John Maine finishes throwing his 100 pitches and 3 and 1/3 innings. And I know the Mets strive to be like the Yankees but does it even have to reach down to messing with a good young arm. The Mets say they like Mejia as a starter. So what good would have come out of them having Mejia pan out as an 8th inning guy? Having the front office go back and forth about whether or not to start him or keep him in the pen. Then maybe have him lose all his mystique like Joba Chamberlain. Maybe come up with a cool name for his pitch and inning counts as they convert him back to a starter. The Jenrry Policy? Mejia Regulation? And to top all of this off, the Phillies claimed Figueroa off waivers. So apparently he wasn't good enough to make a team with obvious pitching deficiancies but he's good enough for the best team in the National League.

2. Bring up Ike Davis, Ruben Tejada and Fernando Martinez. That's just throwing us a bone. Fernando Tatis and Mike Jacobs are not doing it at first. Ike Davis raked in Spring Training and is continuing to do so in AAA. I am a Daniel Murphy apologist and I was okay with him coming in to the season as the Mets first baseman. As it is, Murphy is not going to be ready for a few weeks. What's the worst that happens bringing Ike Davis up? He gets his cup of coffee and he gets sent back down if he doesn't perform better than Murphy would and the best case is that your first basemen of the future is ready now. I'm not saying Tejada is any great shakes but this is more a way to officially end the Luis Castillo era. To me, he's the face of this failure. I get bad feelings everytime I see him. What is Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr doing in centerfield that is blocking Martinez from playing until Carlos Beltran gets back (for the record, I do not think he's coming back)? Fans like to see the young guys. For better or worse, we have shown up for Alex Escobar, Lastings Milledge and Martinez' first starts at Shea. When your team isn't good, fans at least can get in to seeing the young guys. By throwing these average re-tread type players out there every night you're not doing your ticket sales or the product on the field any favors.
