UFC 121: Preview & Picks

In just a few minutes, Brock Lesnar will return to the octagon along with several other fighters to compete in UFC 121. This is an interesting card, with some interesting implications for the possible winners. Will this be the end for Tito Ortiz? Has Lesnar finally met his match? Is Jake Shields the real deal? Is Diego Sanchez still a contender? All questions that will be answered soon.

Here are my selections for most of the fights tonight.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Brendan Schaub: Although I am unimpressed by Schaubs fight resume so far, its interesting to note that Gonzagas most recent wins are against similar caliber opponents. That being said, Gonzaga wants to get back in the mix for a title shot, and this is his first step. I like Gonzaga.

Tito ortiz vs. Matt Hamill: I will never buy into either of these fighters as super talents, but I especially dont buy into Hamill. A loss for Tito here would (should) spell the end for him and I dont expect him to fall that easily. I like Tito.

Diego Sanchez vs. Paulo Thiago: This is a very interesting fight. After once being mentioned as the biggest contender for the lightweight title, two consecutive losses have knocked Diego Sanchez back down a few pegs. This is no easy fight for him to start his ascension back into the welterweight division, but I expect Sanchez to prevail.

Jake Shields vs. Martin Kampman: This is my favorite pick of the night. An unproven Shields has to come into the octagon with a tremendous amount of pressure and take on a tough Kampman. No easy task, and I expect no easy victory. I like Kampman.

Cain Velasquez vs. Brock Lesnar: Very interesting fight. Velasquez is awesome, thats obvious. But what is also obvious is that he is not nearly the right size to take down Goliath in this matchup. If he wants to win, he'll have to do it standing up and I think that will be too tough. Unfortunately, I like Lesnar....argh.
