So I'm a bit surprised that this website has not spurred any Braylon Edwards talk - or maybe it has and I was just too blinded by the maniacal orange background to spot it. But I really dislike this trade for the Jets for a couple of reasons. One, I really believe Edwards' breakout season was a huge fluke. "Good" receivers simply don't drop as many passes as Edwards does. Okay, okay maybe they do. To some extent, dropped passes ARE a function of being thrown to as QBs nominally decide to throw to their most open and, frequently, best receivers. But, as I may have discussed with some of you when the Giants were said to be in the hunt over the off-season, I simply don't think Edwards is a good receiver. (Blogger aside> I'm doing a lot of google searches as I write this post and I've noticed that all of my search requests now have barcodes associated with them - what's the technological purpose of that?) BTW, this is the point in the blog post where, if I had access to a Football Outsiders premium account, I'd compare his statistics to players of similar statistics at an equal stage of their career. But I haven't paid the premium subscription rates, so I won't pretend to come up with any relevant names. However, here are two names/things , I would NOT trade for Braylon Edwards straight up: 1. Chansi Stuckey 2. A 2nd or 3rd round draft pick.
Now, I'm not going to pretend that Stuckey will be great or anything. He won't. But given his youth, role in the Jets offense, and salary, I'll keep the possession receiver over the "star" receiver who just caught zero balls against the Cincinnati Bengals and punched Lebron James' 5'8" 135 pound friend in the face last night. Can you imagine that? Can you imagine a professional football player punching a 50 pound lighter version of me or Bob in the face (apologies to blog readers who don't know the authors). That's ludicrous! Why would you trade anything but a sack of STD meds for such a player. Well maybe those STD meds are more valuable. Why would you even trade a sack of sorries.
If the Jets were absolutely adamant that Edwards would return to form with Mark Sanchez in NY, don't you think they still could have bargained a bit more aggressively with the Browns here? Again, zero catches in the last week. Problems with the law. Problems antagonizing the MOST FAMOUS AND POPULAR HUMAN BEING IN THE STATE OF OHIO (and maybe the country). You're telling me the Jets couldn't have taken a bolder trade stance?

As a Jets fan I'm not completely disappointed in the trade. Braylon Edwards does have talent...we know it's there. My biggest problem is that they gave up too much with no guarantee in return. He's a free agent. As much as I did like Stuckey, if that's the main player you had to give up not to have to give up higher draft picks, than I'm fine with it.
ReplyDeleteI don't know Keith how much higher of a pick could they have given up? They gave up a third (possibly a second but that's performance based) and a fifth. That's more than ATL gave up for Tony Gonzales. Honestly, wouldn't you much rather have Tony Gonzalez? I'm not trying to play woulda, shoulda, coulda here. I'm merely try to establish "value" in this market. And in this market, as I see it, Edwards was wildly overvalued...
